As any prominent honors show nears, you'll find an outcry for the addition of new categories to recognize underappreciated efforts and delight the spirits of followers with niche passions.
Another commentator previously argued for a horror game category. That would be fantastic. So would tabletop games, representing a dedicated supporter's campaign. Yet I need to apologize in advance for pushing forward because like all blinkered fanatics, there's a strong justification for why my demand is the most urgent and important of all. The demand is this: There should be a category for puzzle games.
The Genre Classification Challenge
Categorizing art by genre isn't exact; it remains highly personal, and typically generate discussions concluding with vague boundaries. It's understandable that cinema institutions don’t do it. However, it represents an essential concession for the industry of video games, which are so diverse they barely qualify as a single art form.
For comprehensive acknowledgment of interactive entertainment excellence to be recognized, while allowing diverse titles to have a chance for representation, genre categories are essential.
Existing Game Classification System
The major gaming awards presently include genre categories for Action-oriented games, Adventure-action titles, Role-Playing, Combat games, Sim/Strategy, plus athletic and racing experiences. Between them, these classifications successfully include many game types, making space possible for most games within them.
This doesn't apply to logic-based experiences. No suitable classification appears for their placement. Consider three of recent excellent titles, all very different: structural challenges in a particular game, fast-paced pattern recognition from another release, and the sweetly sociological logic puzzles in another game. Which classification works within current classifications? Nowhere, that’s where.
Recognition Challenges
There are dozens excellent brain-teasers released every year that have no home at major award shows, if they accidentally match award groups including Mobile Game, VR/AR Game, or the intensely contested independent game categories.
- One classic puzzle game received no recognition for anything that year
- A different innovative game received no nominations that year
- Popular arranging title got ignored in 2021
- Only a few logic titles scraped into independent or mobile categories
Significance of Puzzle Games
Frequently they represent small games, yet the craft of the puzzle game holds tremendous importance. Iconic mobile puzzle games stand as most engaged experiences worldwide maintaining this status for many years.
The iconic tile-matching title challenges well-known building titles claiming status as best-selling game of all time; it additionally competes for top gaming experience. Brain-teasers form essential building blocks within interactive entertainment, and they are in conversation across multiple categories.
The Solution and Justification
Brain-teasers wouldn't encounter this problem. It would be easy to populate a field of five engaging, different, qualified experiences each ceremony simply — perhaps, with difficulty, since numerous excellent so many good games out.
To emphasize again, these represent titles without proper classification in important events. Puzzle game makers function at the challenging frontier game development, producing among the purest expressions within interactive entertainment. Similar to cinema stunt performers, they warrant appreciation. Let’s not keep them waiting decades.
