Seven alleged individuals of Germany's left-wing extremist group face trial over multiple attacks

Seven individuals allegedly belonging to the left-wing extremist organization Antifa Ost began their trial on this week, facing charges for attacks targeting far-right activists that earned them the moniker “the hammer group”.

Global terror listing and legal charges

Earlier this month, the United States designated the organization as a terrorist group along with multiple additional left-wing extremist and anarchist groups.

German prosecutors state the network was behind attacks on sites in Germany and neighboring Hungary between 2018 and 2023. Among the incidents is the repeated targeting of a restaurant owner in Thuringia, whose establishment was known as a gathering spot for rightwing activists.

Some suspects are allegedly accused of using hammers against presumed rightwing extremists, causing several with serious injuries.

Court proceedings and cross-border allegations

Court proceedings involving six men and one woman is scheduled to continue until July 2026 in the city of Dresden. Two defendants, named as Johann G and Paul M., also face charges for attacks in Budapest during February 2023, around an annual event known as the “day of honour” that attracts rightwing extremists from throughout the continent.

Separately, another German activist, Maja T, is currently on trial in Hungary for multiple charges of attempted violent acts against far-right activists in the lead-up to the identical event in 2023.

Historical background and group hierarchy

Eastern Germany has historically served as a breeding ground for both far-right and anti-immigration youth groups, as well as the often militant anti-fascist networks that oppose them.

Prosecutors describe Johann G. as a senior figure within the organization, responsible for planning attacks and recruiting accomplices.

Together with Paul M, he is alleged to have arranged instruction courses where leftwing extremists trained in fighting methods and rehearsed attacks. At depots managed by the suspect, the network reportedly stockpiled hammers, irritant sprays, disguises and communication devices.

Previous convictions and global responses

Another militant formerly involved with the group, Lina E., became a cause celebre within some far-left activist circles following her conviction in 2023 for attacks on presumed far-right targets.

The US designation makes group members barred from entering the United States, blocks financial holdings they could possess within the world’s largest economy and criminalizes offering assistance to them.

The German right-wing Alternative for Germany applauded the American move and called on the German administration to take similar action. In contrast, the country's diplomatic office merely commented it had “taken note” of the US designation.

“The danger from the organization has recently decreased significantly. The ringleaders and particularly violent members have either already been convicted or remain detained.”
