Patients Stopping Anti-Obesity Medications Put On Weight Far More Rapidly Compared to Those on Conventional Diets

Obesity treatment often requires ongoing approaches.

A recent study reveals that individuals who stop using popular weight-loss injections like Wegovy and Mounjaro tend to recover lost weight at a significantly accelerated pace than those who end traditional diet and exercise programs.

Published data in a prominent health publication demonstrates that while obese individuals frequently drop substantial amounts of their total mass while using the jabs, the weight returns at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month once they quit.

"Individuals using these treatments need to be informed of the risk of fast rebound weight gain when the therapy concludes," warns researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.

Such speed of recovery implies a return to original weight in about one and a half years.

Analyzing Treatments

The study, which looked at dozens of trials involving over 9,000 of participants, contrasted the effects of these new drugs with conventional dieting.

Researchers emphasize that individuals who lose weight through lifestyle changes alone typically see a slower weight regain—around 0.1 kg a month—once they finish.

Explaining the Quick Rebound

Doctors propose the mode of action of the injections is key to understanding the heightened rebound.

GLP-1 drugs copy a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which moderates appetite.

"Artificially providing GLP-1 levels far above than the body's typical production might result in the body to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous hormone, and could diminish sensitivity to its effects," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.

"Withdrawal of this GLP-1 'fix' means appetite is unsuppressed, making excessive eating much more probable."

A Chronic Disease?

The NHS recommend the injections for individuals with obesity-related medical conditions, accompanied by prescribed diet and exercise modifications.

A number of clinicians say that, given the significant potential of weight regain, the treatment might need to be ongoing.

This view is echoed by drug manufacturers, who note that the findings "highlight the long-term nature of obesity," akin to managing conditions like hypertension.

User Experiences

Users who have discontinued the jabs report a sudden resurgence of appetite.

"It felt as if something activating and you're instantly starving," said a patient.

This challenge is exacerbated if users have not developed permanent lifestyle or habit modifications during treatment.

Significant Use

Figures indicate that a significant number of people in the UK have tried these injections in the last 12 months, with interest being substantial.

  • Adoption is more common among women compared to men.
  • The 40s and 50s demographic shows the highest usage rates.
  • Many access the medications through private prescriptions rather than public health services.

Finally, clinicians emphasize that while these medications are powerful tools for weight loss, they are not a magic solution and lasting health benefits relies on ongoing lifestyle management.
